NFC Simplifying Access Across Various Industries

Aliro 1.0 digital access control ecosystem connecting smartphones, smart locks, NFC, Bluetooth LE and UWB technologies across residential and commercial environments

The Connectivity Standards Consortium (“Consortium”) today announced the release of the Aliro 1.0 specification, a new communication protocol and credential standard designed to revolutionize how users interact with access points in all aspects of their lives. Interestingly, many modern access solutions now leverage NFC technology to streamline these interactions.

While the ease of unlocking smart home doors often captures public attention, Aliro is designed to have a broader impact, simplifying interoperability across various access control applications, including corporate offices, universities, hotels, and single-family and multi-family homes. In particular, NFC provides convenient touch-based access in these scenarios.

Driving Adoption Through Integration with Major Wallets

A key advantage of Aliro is its recognition by the world’s leading mobile wallet ecosystem. Through partnerships with Apple, Google, and Samsung, Aliro offers a standardized digital credential experience, leveraging the smartphones and wearables people use every day. This strategic partnership expands Aliro’s reach, enabling users to easily navigate between home, workplace, and public spaces using the secure digital wallets that come with their operating systems. Moreover, NFC compatibility ensures seamless integration with these digital wallets.

Tobin Richardson, President and CEO of the Connectivity Standards Alliance, stated:

“Aliro is addressing the fragmentation that hinders the adoption of digital keys, replacing it with a single interoperability standard built collaboratively by alliance members. By directly connecting the access control industry to the leading mobile wallet ecosystem, Aliro provides a secure, seamless experience with applications far exceeding access control itself. Lower integration complexity means faster innovation and shorter time-to-market. This is exactly how we build the access control of the future.”

A Unified Standard for Secure and Seamless Access

The Aliro 1.0 specification establishes a robust framework that leverages asymmetric encryption to ensure secure and trusted interaction between user devices and card readers while respecting user privacy. This standardized protocol is designed for broad application across the entire access control ecosystem, providing a reliable experience for corporate offices, universities, hotels, single-family and multi-family residences, and even areas without network coverage such as underground parking lots and elevators.

To meet diverse installation needs, this specification supports multiple transmission technologies, including Near Field Communication (NFC) for touch access, Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth LE) for user-initiated long-range communication, and Bluetooth Low Energy plus Ultra Wideband (UWB) for seamless, secure hands-free authentication. As a result, NFC remains a crucial element for convenient, secure access.

This program brings together over 220 member companies worldwide — including lock manufacturers, chip suppliers, and mobile platform leaders — working together to create a better and more secure mobile access experience. Through close collaboration, member companies including Apple, ASSA ABLOY, Google, Infineon Technologies, Last Lock, Samsung Electronics, and STMicroelectronics have combined technology, expertise, and innovation to drive the development of the Aliro 1.0 specification. Apple, Allegion, Aqara, Google, HID, Kastle, Kwikset, Last Lock, Nordic Semiconductor, Nuki Home Solutions, NXP Semiconductors, Qorvo, Samsung Electronics, and STMicroelectronics are expected to be among the first to receive Aliro 1.0 certification.

Empowering the Value Chain

Aliro delivers tangible benefits to the entire industry value chain by lowering implementation barriers and reducing overall complexity for stakeholders. For manufacturers, the standard acts as a universal arbiter of interoperability certification, significantly reducing R&D costs while simplifying integration processes with new partners. Integrators also benefit from this streamlined approach, enabling them to more easily set up and more efficiently troubleshoot devices from multiple hardware vendors. Ultimately, Aliro provides system owners with simplified maintenance options and allows them the flexibility to mix and match hardware and software from different vendors across various user devices.

Future Outlook

The release of Aliro 1.0 is not a one-off initiative, but rather an evolving standard. The alliance has looked to the future to integrate upcoming market and ecosystem needs, such as expanded use cases like secure key sharing, while maintaining backward compatibility to ensure existing implementations are not affected as the technology matures. By building an infrastructure that evolves in sync with the market, we ensure that Aliro remains a persistent interoperability layer for universal digital credentials. As the specification moves into the authentication and commercialization phase, this collective effort is poised to provide the scalability needed for long-term global success.
