Expanding Samsung Wallet from Vehicles to Smart Home Access

Samsung has recently announced the launch of its new Digital Home Key feature, a capability developed within Samsung Wallet based on the Aliro smart lock standard framework. This innovation allows Galaxy users to unlock compatible smart door locks directly via their smartphones, a process that often utilizes NFC technology for secure access.
Starting in March 2026, the feature expands Samsung Wallet’s digital key capabilities beyond vehicles into residential access, offering users a more secure and convenient way to manage everyday entry with nfc-enabled locks.
With the introduction of Digital Home Key, Samsung Wallet now supports both automotive and home access scenarios, seamlessly integrating with the broader Galaxy ecosystem to further simplify daily life.
Built on Aliro Standard for Seamless Connectivity
Supporting NFC and UWB Unlocking Technologies
The Digital Home Key is built on the Aliro standard, developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA). This standard enables interoperability across devices, allowing users to unlock compatible smart locks using their smartphones regardless of brand, and nfc is one of the supported options.
The solution supports two primary unlocking methods:
- NFC (Near Field Communication): Tap the smartphone on the lock for quick access
- UWB (Ultra-Wideband): Enables hands-free unlocking through proximity detection
These technologies provide users with flexible, secure, and frictionless access options tailored to different usage scenarios, including those powered by nfc protocols.
How to Add a Digital Home Key
Integration with SmartThings and Matter Ecosystem
Users can add a Digital Home Key through SmartThings after setting up a compatible smart lock. SmartThings operates based on the global smart home standard Matter smart home standard, ensuring broad device compatibility and nfc support for tap-to-unlock functions.
Depending on the device and lock capabilities, users can choose from multiple unlocking methods:
- Tap-to-unlock via NFC
- Hands-free unlocking via UWB proximity detection
- Remote unlocking via mobile app
To accelerate ecosystem adoption, Samsung is collaborating with leading smart lock brands, including Aqara, Nuki, Schlage, and Xthings, to support this feature and enhance nfc compatibility for digital keys.
Enterprise-Grade Security with Samsung Knox
EAL6+ Certified Protection for Digital Keys
Security remains a core focus of the Digital Home Key solution. Digital keys are securely stored locally within Samsung Wallet and protected by Samsung Knox security platform, Samsung’s industry-leading security framework, especially in nfc operations.
The solution meets EAL6+ certification standards, providing strong protection against unauthorized access. Even if a device is lost, users retain full control over their digital keys, including those used via nfc technology.
Through Samsung’s device-finding service, users can remotely manage or revoke access. Additionally, biometric authentication and PIN verification ensure that only authorized users can access and manage the digital keys, whether they’re using nfc or other unlocking methods.
Availability and Device Compatibility
Gradual Rollout Starting March 2026
The Digital Home Key feature will begin rolling out in select regions starting March 2026, with broader availability expanding in line with compatible smart lock product releases, including nfc-enabled locks.
However, not all Galaxy smartphones support both NFC and UWB technologies. Compatible devices include newer models such as Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and later, as well as Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and newer devices that provide advanced nfc connectivity.
