In the afternoon of September 17, 2024 local time, a massive pager explosion in Lebanon killed 12 people and injured about 2,800, followed by a large number of pager (BP) explosions in several places on the afternoon of 18, which has now killed at least 32 people.

There has been a lot of discussion about the explosion, and the public discussion about the pager explosion has extended to concerns about communication equipment and network security.

 

The past and present life of BP aircraft

As a communication product of the last century, BP machine was popular in the 1980s and 1990s, when it frequently appeared in Hong Kong movies, a small device pinned to the waist, emitting a beep signal sound, is the current generation of young people through the retained image of the BP machine's initial impression. With the emergence of fixed-line and mobile phone electronic products, the figure of the BP machine with the arrival of the millennium has also been left in the last century.

 

In today's era of communication and electronic products, why did the explosion news of BP machine appear?

 

BP machine commonly known as pager, also known as pager, call machine, is an old-fashioned radio receiving equipment. It receives paging signals from the network side (communication base stations), converts them into numbers, letters or Chinese characters, and displays them to the user through the display screen. As a pure signal receiving device, the pager does not transmit signals and has the advantage of being difficult to be located.

With the rapid development of Internet communication capabilities comes the problem of electronic surveillance technology, which is why in February 2024, the Lebanese Party ordered senior personnel to give up the use of mobile phones and adopt an old-fashioned means of communication - pagers (BPS), in an attempt to avoid government personnel's location tracking.

For the cause of the explosion of the pager, there are two big guesses: one, through hacking means, make its lithium battery short circuit or overload, which causes the battery to heat up and release energy to cause the explosion; Second, during batch operations at the supply chain end, explosives are placed in the pagers in advance.

 

No matter what the reason, this undoubtedly reveals the omission in the process of network equipment security. WIoTa communication protocol has designed a deeply optimized short message mode for the characteristics of high uplink proportion and low power consumption of IoT, avoiding the complex handshake mechanism in traditional communication protocols and reducing the communication power consumption of IoT. At the same time, the control channel and data channel in the physical layer are designed to simplify the processing, reduce the overhead and power consumption.

 

(6) LaKi

 

LaKi is a new set of Internet of Things wireless technology launched by KM Electronics after years of painstaking research and development, and is a rare complete wireless communication technology that includes the protocol layer LaKiplus and the physical layer RF SoC chip. In terms of data security between terminals and gateways, LaKi technology transmits data through ciphertext and supports AES128 encryption, thus improving the data security of LaKi network.

From the pager explosion incident, we can see that while technology brings convenience, there are also potential risks. As an important cornerstone to ensure the security of the Internet of Things, the Internet of Things private network technology has a strong security protection capability, which brings a more secure and reliable environment to the Internet of Things.
