Industry trend| Evergy, in partnership with Kigen, enhances grid resilience by using leading eSIM technology to ensure smart, seamless connectivity between public and private networks

2025-11-18

Evergy Selects Kigen's Secure eSIM OS and eIM Solution for Seamless Switching Amid Automatic Failures Between Private and Public Networks, Maximizing Grid Reliability.

Kansas City, Missouri and Cambridge, UK – November 3, 2025 – Evergy (NYSE: EVRG), one of the largest investor-owned utilities in the Midwest serving 1.7 million customers in Kansas and Missouri, today announced its selection of Kigen, a global leader in eSIM and iSIM technologies, to enhance grid resilience. By adopting Kigen's secure eSIM OS and eIM solution, Evergy is integrating private LTE networks with public networks into an automated connectivity layer – providing a solid foundation for reliable operations in the face of extreme weather, increasing energy demand, and the complexities of distributed energy resources.

Reliability is a core pillar of Evergy's strategy, alongside economics and sustainability. As the utility sector accelerates the integration of distributed energy resources, advanced metering infrastructure, and dynamic billing systems, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity has become paramount. Severe thunderstorms, storms, and other events causing power outages, as well as routine network upgrades, can disrupt real-time telemetry data streams—the very lifeblood of modern power grids. Without automation, managing tens of thousands of IoT devices on a large scale poses a significant risk to service continuity and cost-effectiveness.

Evergy's LTE network currently covers 100 sites, supporting thousands of IoT sensors, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) devices, and operational technology equipment. With the number of devices expected to expand to tens of thousands, seamless failover between private and public networks is crucial. At this scale, manual methods are insufficient.

Evergy's LTE network currently covers 100 sites, supporting thousands of IoT sensors, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) devices, and operational technology equipment. With the anticipated deployment scale expanding to tens of thousands of devices, seamless failover between public and private networks is essential. Traditional manual maintenance methods are no longer adequate for managing such a large-scale network.

Bill Franzen, Chief Engineer of Radio Communication Systems at Evergy, stated: “In the modernization of the power grid, uninterrupted device data means we have a clear understanding of the grid's status, enabling us to effectively address the risks of power outages caused by rapid energy transitions and extreme weather. Achieving autonomous control over infrastructure requires ensuring network connectivity, and automation is the cornerstone of dynamic billing and AI applications. By adopting Kigen's eSIM and eIM solutions configured to our needs, we have successfully set a new benchmark for grid resilience—the robust smart grid we have long strived for.”

Kigen's secure eSIM operating system and SGP.32-compliant eIM solution enable Evergy to dynamically and flexibly manage connectivity through pre-configured multi-carrier profiles for eSIMs. Kigen's eSIM operating system for IoT and consumer devices features built-in configurable functions, such as support for network recovery and app-based recovery, enabling dynamic and automated failover between dedicated LTE networks and preferred public networks based on business rules. These operations are all centrally managed through the Kigen Pulse platform, enabling large-scale control of equipment clusters by region, asset type, or site. This ensures business continuity, reduces lifecycle costs, and supports broader strategic goals such as capital efficiency, security, and sustainability.

Cybersecurity is crucial in critical infrastructure. Evergy's Kigen eIM system, deployed at its Dublin site, is fully certified through the GSMA Subscription Managed Security Certification Program and operates the Kigen eIM solution in strict accordance with the latest GSMA SGP.32 IoT eSIM technical specification. This ensures compliance and provides a trusted foundation for building a secure and reliable power grid operation system.

Kigen CEO Vincent Korstanje stated, “By building a dynamic, automated system that supports scalable failover and recovery, we are helping Evergy achieve its grid planning vision of enhanced reliability, resilience, and operational intelligence. In the context of utilities leading the energy transition, uninterrupted connectivity has become the cornerstone of artificial intelligence, dynamic billing, and distributed energy integration. With Kigen’s configurable eSIM operating system and SGP.32-compliant eIM solution, utilities can take full control of their connectivity and build future-proof smart grids.”

Kigen’s eIM solution has won the “2025 IoT Solution of the Year” award at the Mobile Breakthrough Awards. It will be showcased at UBBA Plugfest and Enlit Europe, vividly demonstrating how utilities can leverage eSIM technology to build secure and future-proof network architectures.
