According to eenewseurope on November 13, wireless communication chip company Nordic Semiconductor decided to cancel its acquisition plan for Norwegian ultra-wideband wireless technology company Novelda. This decision was made after the two parties signed a letter of intent (LOI) and planned to complete due diligence at the end of November.
Public information shows that Novelda is a Norwegian company that focuses on ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, especially in the design of short-range radar sensors. The UWB short-range pulse radar sensor provided by Novelda can achieve high-precision human presence detection and is suitable for a variety of indoor applications, including consumer electronic devices and smart building systems.
Nordic is headquartered in Norway and has more than 1,500 employees worldwide. It has supplemented ANT+, Thread and Zigbee technologies, and launched a low-power compact LTE-M/NB-IoT cellular Internet of Things solution in 2018, expanding its application in the field of Internet of Things. In 2021, the company further supplemented Wi-Fi technology in its product portfolio. Market data shows that Nordic has long occupied about 40% of the global low-power Bluetooth chip market share since 2016, ranking first in the world.
Nordic also announced that the company will lay off about 120 employees, accounting for about 8% of the total number of employees. This decision is part of the company's efforts to adapt to market changes and corporate strategy adjustments. It is reported that as of December 31, 2023, Nordic has 1,426 employees, a steady increase compared with previous years.
CEO Vegard Wollan said in a statement: "We have made the difficult decision to reduce the size of our workforce, while also rebalancing and reorganizing our team as part of a broader strategy to achieve Nordic's target business model." He further explained: "This move is designed to strengthen its focus on strategic key projects, improve operational efficiency, and optimize operating expenses." Nordic said it expects this reorganization to increase expenditures by approximately $5 million for the fourth quarter and full-year financial results in 2024.
On November 12, Nordic announced the launch of the nRF54L series of wireless SoC products, including the previously released nRF54L15 as well as the new nRF54L10 and nRF54L05.
According to reports, all three devices in the new nRF54L series integrate 2.4 GHz radio and MCU functions (including CPU, memory and peripherals) into a single ultra-low power chip, supporting a variety of applications from simple high-volume products to demanding advanced designs. Main applications include wearable devices, smart bracelets, game controllers, HID devices, as well as medical equipment, smart homes and industrial IoT products.
Nordic said that the nRF54L15 is well suited for demanding applications, while the nRF54L10 and nRF54L05 are targeted at high-volume applications such as smart tags, electronic shelf labels, asset trackers and other cost-sensitive IoT devices.
