The Smart Communication Positioning Circle learned that according to multiple foreign media reports, Nordic Semiconductor (hereinafter referred to as Nordic) announced that it has signed a letter of intent (LOI) to acquire Novelda, a Norwegian ultra-wideband wireless technology company.
The potential acquisition will depend on satisfactory results of due diligence, final board approval and other conditions, the report said. Although the specific amount of the acquisition has not been disclosed, the move marks Nordic's further expansion in the field of ultra-wideband technology. Currently, Novelda is in the early commercialization stage. Nordic said the due diligence process will begin immediately and is scheduled to be completed by the end of November.
Public information shows that Nordic was founded in 1983 and is a leading global supplier of integrated circuit hardware and software. It is committed to the research and development, design and sales of wireless Internet of Things system-level chips, and has pioneered ultra-low power wireless technology, becoming a representative company in the field of wireless technology.
Headquartered in Norway, Nordic has more than 1,500 employees worldwide. It has supplemented ANT+, Thread and Zigbee technologies, and launched low-power compact LTE-M/NB-IoT cellular IoT solutions in 2018, expanding its application in the IoT field. In 2021, the company further supplemented Wi-Fi technology to its product portfolio. Market data shows that Nordic has long occupied about 40% of the global low-power Bluetooth chip market share since 2016, ranking first in the world.

As a pioneer in wireless technology, Nordic is also an important member of the ANT+ Alliance, Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), Thread Group, Zigbee Alliance, Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), Wi-Fi Alliance and Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA).
Public information shows that Novelda is a Norwegian company that focuses on ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, especially in the world's leading position in short-range radar sensor design. The UWB short-range pulse radar sensor provided by Novelda can achieve high-precision human presence detection and is suitable for a variety of indoor applications, including consumer electronic devices and smart building systems.
These sensors are not only able to detect the presence of a person, but also by detecting tiny movements of the human body, such as breathing and heartbeat, which is more sensitive and accurate than traditional sensors based on passive infrared radiation (PIR), ultrasound or microwave detection. Novelda AS's sensor technology is patented worldwide and complies with UWB regulations around the world.
The acquisition is expected to strengthen Nordic's market position in the field of wireless technology and may drive the company's further innovation and development in UWB ultra-wideband technology. With due diligence underway and final approval approaching, this acquisition could have a significant impact on the future of both companies.
