Giantsemi Reveals GT1500: An Advanced Ultra-Wideband Chip for Precise Positioning and Connectivity (IoT Expo China-IOTE® Expo)

2024-02-26

On February 23, 2024, Shenzhen Giant Microelectronics Company Limited (“Giantsemi”) unveiled a cutting-edge Ultra-Wideband (UWB) System-on-Chip (SoC) named GT1500, designed for ranging, positioning, and wireless connectivity applications.

Unaffected by network infrastructure coverage, UWB enables ubiquitous, rapid, and accurate ranging and positioning indoors and outdoors. In addition to its outstanding ranging and positioning capabilities, UWB offers configurable data rates for efficient wireless connectivity, paving the way for new applications in smartphones, wearables, digital keys, tags, and more. It also facilitates new consumer-oriented commercial applications in areas such as access control, smart payments, smart homes, and smart cities.

Leading the industry in both low power consumption and overall performance, the Giantsemi GT1500 chip adopts wafer-level packaging, with dimensions of 9 square millimeters, making it the world’s smallest UWB SoC chip. The GT1500 is a standard and platform-type UWB chip, featuring a compact single-chip solution with four receive channels, including RF, analog, and baseband functions. It works closely with embedded MCUs to execute control and protocol processing, completing all tasks within a single chip.

The GT1500 is particularly suitable for space-constrained wearable devices, tags, and IoT product applications, significantly reducing the complexity of 3D AoA design, peripheral component count, and product Bill of Materials (BoM) cost. Its compact design allows the GT1500 to be placed close to the antenna, improving signal reception and overall UWB performance. Furthermore, compared to similar products using button batteries (CR2032, 235mAh), the GT1500 significantly extends the battery life of UWB tags. For UWB applications requiring long standby and online times, the GT1500’s longer standby time significantly enhances user experience.

The GT1500 has been certified by the FiRa Alliance and also complies with the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) Digital Key 3.0 standard.

Key features and performance of the GT1500 include:

Ultra-thin wafer-level packaging: 49 pins, 3.2mm (length) x 2.8mm (width) x 0.6mm (height)

Single-chip one-transmitter-four-receiver (1T4R) architecture

Integrated protocols and software, eliminating the need to run protocols or software on external processors

Supports time-of-flight (ToF) based single-sided, double-sided two-way ranging

Supports 2D and 3D AoA (angle of arrival); supports time difference of arrival (TDoA) measurement

Supports 4.0 ~ 9.0GHz frequency range

Supports multiple standard communication rates: 31.2Mbps, 27.2Mbps, 7.8Mbps, 6.8Mbps, and 850Kbps

Supports multiple standard interfaces: SPI, I2C, UART, GPIO

Ranging accuracy: ±3cm; Angle measurement accuracy: ±3 degrees

Peak power consumption of the receiver: 125mW

Peak power consumption of the transmitter: 69mW

Giantsemi will exhibit at the IOTE 2024 Shanghai station (April 24–26, 2024, Shanghai China). Giantsemi’s partners will also showcase leading UWB applications at the booth, including: 1) UWB tags using CR2032 button batteries, with longer lifespans; 2) Downlink TDoA (Downlink TDoA), easy to install, supporting an unlimited number of expandable terminals; 3) UWB door lock system solutions, and more.

With excellent performance, quality, and cost advantages, the GT1500 can help customers accelerate product development and market entry.
