Industry trend|RFID is becoming more popular in libraries in North America

2025-03-24

In today's society, as the public increasingly relies on and loves self-service options, the library industry is undergoing a technological revolution. At the core of this revolution is the widespread use of RFID (radio frequency identification) technology. With its unique automatic identification capabilities, RFID technology is changing the management model of libraries, improving service efficiency, and also bringing readers a more convenient and efficient borrowing experience.

The application of RFID technology in the library industry is not new, but in recent years, its application scope and influence have shown exponential growth. Whether it is a small rural library in a remote area or a large library in a bustling city, RFID technology has become an important tool for them to improve service efficiency. By attaching RFID tags with unique ID codes to books, library management software can easily obtain detailed information about the book, thereby realizing automatic identification and circulation management of books.

In the wave of this technological revolution, Bibliotheca is becoming an industry leader. As a leader in RFID technology in the library industry, Bibliotheca has not only established new facilities to serve its growing customer base in North America, but also opened a 32,000-square-foot headquarters, including office and industrial space, and a dedicated customer innovation center. In this innovation center, libraries can experience Bibliotheca's latest solutions first-hand, while the company's field engineers can provide practical expertise and certification programs in the newly designed training center to ensure that libraries can seamlessly adopt and maximize the use of RFID technology.

Take the Spanish Fork Library in Utah as an example. After introducing RFID technology, the library has achieved a transaction growth rate of self-checkout kiosks from 1% to 2% to 75% to 80%. Customers only need to stack books on the reading surface of the newsstand, and the system will automatically identify and complete the borrowing or returning process. This not only greatly reduces the waiting time of customers, but also improves the circulation efficiency of the library. In addition, the Spanish Fork Library has also deployed an automated material handling system for item inspection and classification during the return process, further saving labor time.

Similarly, the Garland County Library in Arkansas has also achieved remarkable results in the application of RFID technology. The library has been using RFID technology for many years and plans to open new branches in the future. RFID technology not only speeds up the library's circulation process, but also enables the library to reallocate staff to other tasks, such as hosting more programs and classes for children and the elderly. In addition, the cost of RFID tags has gradually decreased, making this technology more popular and feasible.

It is worth noting that RFID technology also has an NFC (near field communication) component, which enables smartphones to interrogate NFC chips at a specific frequency in order to register books. This means that readers may only need to use their mobile phones to complete the book borrowing and returning process in the future, further enhancing the convenience of self-service.

RFID technology is driving the library industry towards a new era of efficient and self-service. With the continuous advancement of technology and the further reduction of costs, RFID technology will play a more important role in the library industry, bringing readers a more convenient and efficient borrowing experience.
